Water Your Trees
Believe it or not, watering your trees during the winter isn’t a bad thing! During the season, your trees will enter a period called dormancy. This is a condition caused by increasingly cold temperatures that tell the tree and its roots to stop developing until warmer temperatures arrive. If there isn’t a lot of snow on the ground, water your trees! Dormant trees still need water and oxygen to survive, and they can actually become dehydrated if you don’t regularly water them. If there is a lot of snow, wait; it could melt and over-hydrate your trees if you water them then.
Keep Them Away From Rock Salt
If you have trees near your driveway or walkway, be mindful of how you spread your rock salt! Rock salt can be incredibly damaging to a tree. If a tree comes into contact with rock salt, the salt can accumulate in the soil and make it harder for your tree to absorb nutrients. It can even destroy the roots’ structure and make it difficult to breathe for your tree! Be mindful of where you use your rock salt, and this won’t be a problem you need to deal with.
Clear Your Branches of Snow
Snow is a lot heavier than you think! The weight of snow on your tree branches can cause them to break and fall off, which can negatively affect your tree’s health. If snow falls the night before, make it a point to go out to your yard the morning after and clear your branches of snow. Don’t rustle them aggressively to get the snow off; a few light taps should be enough to do the trick!
