Landscaping After The Snow Melts

Preparing for snowfall is a vital part of ensuring that your landscape survives the winter. However, snowfall isn’t meant to last the whole season! There will generally be periods of time with a lot of snow and periods where it’s nonexistent. After the snowfall melts, are there any steps that you need to take to protect your landscape? There are a few things you can do to preserve it! So, what do you do after the snow melts? We give you some helpful tips below!

Look For Brown Grass

Did you routinely sprinkle rock salt on your driveway to prevent ice from forming this winter? If you did, this is one of the first steps you should take. Brown or dead patches of grass in your lawn usually means that this part of your lawn was exposed to rock salt. If this grass doesn’t regrow in about a month and a half, you’ll want to take extra measures. Rake up the dead grass and seed the area that’s been affected. This should help speed up the regrowth and make your lawn look whole again.

Look For Tree Damage

Much of the damage that your trees will experience during the winter months won’t be due to the cold weather. It will actually be due to the weight of the snow on your trees’ branches! If this weight piles up, your branches could either break or warp, so you should look for signs of that damage once the snow has melted. If you see it, make sure that you prune those branches! You may need to do additional pruning to make sure that your tree has the right tools to grow in the spring, but use your best judgement.

Check For Soil Moisture

If the last snowfall you received placed an even coating around your lawn and trees, there’s a good chance that they’ve received enough water to foster further development. If the snowfall is a bit more patchy, however, you’ll need to examine those parts that didn’t receive snowfall. Feel around the soil area. Is the soil wet, or completely dry? If it’s dry, you’ll want to water the area a little bit to ensure that the soil gets all of the nutrients it needs to thrive. If not, you won’t have to worry about this step.
