Prepping Your Trees for the Fall

Getting your lawn ready for fall doesn’t sound like a big job. All you have to do is just let the weather take over and hope for the best, right? Wrong! Ensuring your yard can withstand the colder temperatures takes just a bit of effort, and a great place to start is with your trees. Keep reading to find out how to properly prepare your trees this fall.

Trim

Pruning helps it divert energy to different parts of the tree. Fall is a great time to start some trimming. Wait until the autumn leaves have all dropped before pruning off bare branches. With fewer limbs that can’t grow leaves now anyway, the tree can send more energy into strengthening the trunk. By the time spring comes around, the trunk will be strong enough that the limbs can grow even stronger themselves. Pruning now has the added advantage of eliminating any weak branches that could break during a winter storm.

Add Oil

Trees and hedges can benefit significantly from simply being oiled. Horticultural oils are an easy-to-find and cheap option that will protect your tree from insect infestations. When it is applied, the oil coats the insects so that they cannot reproduce. That means your tree will be protected from more pests in the spring. And don’t worry – the oils won’t hurt pets or birds, and they aren’t as toxic to welcome insects like ladybugs.

Fertilize

Trees may look dead when they drop all their leaves in the fall, but their roots are actively growing. This growth is crucial to the tree’s future success in the spring. A slow-release fertilizer will give added nutrition so that the tree doesn’t have to work as hard to absorb it from the soil. It will also help them withstand colder temperatures and ward off pests and illnesses.

Plant New Trees

It might be counterintuitive, but fall is the perfect time to plant new trees. Autumn is a very wet season, which growing trees love. The moisture will help the roots grow and keep a firm grasp on the soil below. Plant new trees through October for the best results. Don’t forget to be careful where you plant the trees; as they grow, they will need ample space, so avoid planting them too close to the house, fence, or other trees.
