How to Spot an Unhealthy Tree

The first sign of an unhealthy tree can stem from an issue with the rooting system.  This means it can be difficult for someone not trained to spot.  A proper diagnosis can require equipment to run tests.  With that being said unless you live alongside an arborist, you may not know what to look for in an unhealthy tree.  To help we have highlighted some of the biggest warning signs, outlined when you should contact a professional, and added some tips for keeping your trees healthy.

To prevent an unhealthy tree from becoming dangerous it is important to contact a professional straight away to schedule a tree removal.  The best-case scenario is that the tree is still healthy and it will leave your mind at ease when the next storm rolls around.

Symptoms of an Unhealthy Tree

  • Dead and/or broken branches:  These can be the results of a recent storm, but also can be signs of rot or decay.
  • Significant lean:  This can be due to oversaturated soil or damaged roots.  While one is much easier to remedy, both show signs that the tree is no longer properly anchored to the ground.
  • Sprouting branches:  Branches that grow midway along the trunk or branches of the tree.  Also known as epicormic growth.
  • Thinning canopy:  sparse leaves that look like they have been eaten or turning colors in the wrong season.
