The winter is finally coming to an end. The snow is melting, the birds are chirping, and the leaves are slowly starting to grow again. While we all look forward to the nice sunny weather, we don’t look at the landscape and yard work with the same enthusiasm. However, a little maintenance can go a long way in ensuring your trees are in great shape to thrive throughout the year. Follow along as we guide you through spring touch ups for your growing landscape.
Take some time to inspect your trees from the bottom up and look for any signs of snow or ice damage. You should be looking for cracks, decay, or holes in the trunk of the tree. Also look for any indication of diseases or infestation that could be caused by insects, drought, or soil compaction.
Remove any dead branches or branches that were damaged during the winter months. Dead branches are never safe to keep on your trees so be sure to dispose of any that you come across. More importantly, obstructing branches could be a risk for potential safety hazard. Generally speaking, you don't want to prune more than 25% of the tree’s foliage at once so if there are any areas that seem difficult or unmanageable, it is strongly recommended to consider seeking professional help.
Mulching is a great way to improve the overall health of your trees, as it helps conserve moisture and controls the growth of weeds close to the tree's trunk and roots. Avoid using too much mulch, also known as “volcano mulching,” because this could retain too much moisture and increase the risk of fungi growth and decay.
